What is phishing? What should I do if I receive fraudulent emails?

Every internet user should know about fraudulent (aka phishing, hoax or spoof) emails that may appear to be from a reputable company but can put you at risk.

Although fraudulent emails can be difficult to spot, they generally ask you to click a link back to a spoof website and provide, update or confirm sensitive personal information. To convince you, they may allude to an urgent or threatening condition concerning your account.

Fraudulent emails are usually designed to obtain one or more of the following personal details from you:

  • Your password or PIN
  • Your card number
  • Your bank account number
  • Your Card Verification Value (CVV2 - the 3 digit number on the back of your card)

Simply clicking the link in the fraudulent email could subject you to background installations of key-logging software or viruses. For more details on phishing and fraudulent emails please go to our FAQ page on fraudulent emails.
